  • TRA Set to hold “Child Online Protection Challenge” event

Mobilk - Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) Bahrain in collaboration with International Telecommunications Union (ITU), and General Organization for Youth & Sports (GOYS) is preparing for the upcoming event: the “Child Online Protection Challenge” or “COP Challenge”. The event, which will take place in the Kingdom Of Bahrain, is in commemoration of Universal Children’s Day on the 20th of November.

Universal Children’s Day was first proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1954, which was followed by the adoption of the “Declaration of the Rights of the Child” by the United Nation on November 20th, 1958. The purpose of the “COP Challenge”, which came as a recommendation by the ITU in the TRA’s previous COP workshop in September, is to create awareness among children on the risks and benefits of going online. The challenge will include various educational, friendly and fun filled activities for children, ages 8 to 14, with the intent of establishing positive outreach.

Head of TRA Bahrain’s Cyber Security Directorate, Dr. Khalid bin Duaij Al Khalifa expressed that “ As every citizen of Bahrain acts as an ambassador, every adult acts as a parent in our community. It is our civic duty to bridge the gap between us and our children – to encourage and ingrain responsible behavior in them when going online. The Internet can be a wonderful place, but dangers exist there too. It’s our job as adults to help them navigate it safely.” He went on further to say that “We expect The COP challenge to be a well-received event by children, and we hope that through the levity and care we aim to approach this with, that children will be more knowledgably prepared to use the internet.”

Cyber Safety Specialist and manager of the COP Challenge event, Ms. Mariam Al Mannai also made the following statement “ I believe the most effective way to reach younger audiences with such an important message is by delivering it through encouraging and entertaining activities. Baba Yasin is a great local celebrity that children identify with, and we’re excited to have him attend. The internet isn’t a bad place, so we believe kids will come away from this challenge with more confidence to use it responsibly.”

TRA’s Cyber Security Directorate is responsible for the SafeSurf initiative which is an ongoing effort to educate parents and children on online safety.
