  • RADICAL DEVELOPER PRANAV MISTRY TO UNVEIL LATEST ‘INVISIBLE COMPUTING’ CONCEPTS AT GITEX

Pranav Mistry is a designer, engineer and inventor regarded by many as the face of future technology, with a vision to combine technology and human behaviour in the real world rather than a separate ‘human and hardware’ divide.

He is the creator of Sixth Sense, a totally interactive series of devices which combines a webcam, a wi-fi smartphone, a mini-projector and four finger pads. No screen or keyboard is necessary – just draw a circle in the air to tell the time, or a star to get the latest weather, even make a square with thumbs and index fingers to take a photograph – the possibilities, he says, are endless.

For the first time in the Middle East Mistry will present ‘SPARSH’, another revolution from the man voted one of the top 15 scientists to watch in Asia and one of the top 35 young innovators in the world.

“The future of computing will always be exciting,” said Mistry, ahead of his appearance the Global Leaders Summit at GITEX on 9 October. “It is a case of pushing every boundary and not following a commercial goal, but driving technical ambition. SPARSH is another example of how humans can interact with computers and be a very real part of the process,” he added. “Cloud is an everyday part of data transfer now and with SPARSH, humans can effectively become their own cloud. For example, you can copy pictures from a digital camera, by simply touching the screen and transfer them onto your tablet by touching that screen.”

Among some of his previous work, Pranav has made intelligent sticky notes that can be searched, located and send messages; a pen that can draw in 3D; a public map that can act as Google of physical world; and an invisible computer mouse. Pranav’s work the Sixth Sense was the winner of the 2009 Popular Science Invention Award.

“With each new major technological breakthrough – Facebook, smart phones, etc. – people tend to think: ‘that’s it.’  But innovation never stops.  Academics, particularly, continue to push technological boundaries every single day, and that’s what makes GITEX so much fun each year.  We all get to see up-close what new technologies have made their way to market.”

During his session at the Global Leaders Summit at GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK, running from 9 – 13 October 2011 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Mistry will also present exclusive videos of his latest concepts for the first time in the region – since the launch of Sixth Sense, his YouTube videos have received more than four million hits.

“The future of technology is at the heart of GITEX and Pranav Mistry is an exceptional innovator with a unique style and boundless ambition,” said Trixee Loh, SVP, Dubai World Trade Centre, organiser of the event. “We are privileged to have him as one of the guest speakers at the event and he is creating an enormous buzz in anticipation of what is sure to be an energetic and enlightening view into the future of computing.”

Mistry is one of five inspirational speakers at the Global Leaders Summit, themed ‘Innovation in Leadership, including Chris Dedicoat, President EMEA, Cisco International, who will present ‘Technology Innovation as a Driver for Sustainability and Economic Growth’, Rod Beckstrom, President and CEO, International Corporation for Assigned Names & Numbers (ICANN), speaking on ‘New gTLDs: The Future of Online Innovation’, Giorgio di Paolo, IT Strategy Lead  IGEM, Accenture, discussing ‘The context for Innovation – Unofficial Thoughts On Tech Trends’ and William Saito, CEO, InTecur KK, on ‘From Science to Implementation: Approaches to Technology’

Alongside the Global Leaders Summit, the GITEX Conference agenda also includes GITEX Cloud Confex, the only dedicated cloud computing event in the region and the unrivalled GITEX Telecomms Symposium, which will bring together the leading international and regional authorities for insights into the ever-evolving and telecommunications industry.

Following three decades of continued modernisation, GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK will this year further evolve and re-invent offering new features which reflect regional and global trends, offering new highlights to exhibitors and attendees alike.

GITEX 2011, taking place at Dubai World Trade Centre from 9 - 13 October, is introducing brand new elements to reinforce its position as the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia (MEASA) regions leading finger on the pulse technology event. As one of the three largest ICT exhibitions in the world, the show connects more than 130,000 industry professionals from five continents with over 3,500 suppliers, and is one of the most influential and high-profile events in the global ICT sector today.
