Within the festivities of Damascus Capital of Arab culture 2008 and in the presence of the city’s organizers and notabilities, Syriatel sponsored the “Bahok” Akram Khan dancing show that took place at the Opera house on the 15th and 17th of March 2008.
The event, a product of the festivities of the British city of Liverpool, the 2008 cultural capital of Europe, is the first of its kind in Damascus; and the third in the world after its performances in Beijing on January 25 2008, and in Liverpool on March 7 and 8 of the same year. Damascus was the third halt of the troop’s travel around the world.
The show attracted a wide-ranging and distinctive audience which responded positively to this modern form of art. The audience was captivated with this new trend of dance, a reflection of multiculturalism pleasing all tastes and fringes of the population. The Bahok show was characterized by its multinational and multilingual dancing performances by a troop whose characters try to communicate, to share the things they carry with them: their experiences, their memories of their original homes, the dreams and aspirations that made them move
Teaming up with acclaimed writer Hanif Kureishi and multi award-winning composer Nitin Sawhney, the internationally celebrated choreographer Akram Khan brought his own troop accompanied by the Chinese National Ballet and dancers from different nationalities (Korean, Indian, South-African and Spanish)
This is the second show sponsored by Syriatel (following the Abed Azarieh one) during the Damascus Capital of Arab Culture 2008 festivities. Syriatel has been focusing on similar cultural activities, aimed at enhancing cultural life in Syria and at grouping Arab and foreign populations of different backgrounds, habits, customs and culture.
