Mobilk - After three successful years of network modernisation and upgrades, Ooredoo has now ‘turbocharged’ over 70 percent of its network across Oman. Following extensive work to build and expand coverage and transform all sites within the turbocharged areas to either 3G+ or 4G, analysis of the customer experience reflects a significant improvement in quality as well as coverage strength of each and every modernised base station.
Starting from just 53 percent 3G+ population coverage in mid-2012, Ooredoo’s mobile 3G+ population coverage now stands at almost 90 percent as of the end of Q1 2015. What’s more, Ooredoo now delivers state-of-the-art 3G+ technology through five different 3G carriers, further enriching customers’ online experience with download speeds of up to 10Mbps. Superfast 4G data services are also expanding rapidly and now cover many areas across Muscat, Salalah, Sohar and Dqum.
Fixed service customers have also benefitted from the extensive countrywide transformation from WiMAX technology to 4G. Today more than 95 percent of Ooredoo’s Home Broadband services are delivered over their 4G network.
Celebrating the successful progress of the countrywide network turbocharging programme, Hassan Al Lawati, Director of Capability Management at Ooredoo said, “By challenging ourselves, we have boosted our customer experience by introducing state-of-the-art mobile and fixed LTE technologies to the Sultanate. Our customers will now also be able to enjoy LTE Advanced, or 4.5G, the next generation of 4G technology, in hotspots around Muscat. Work to cover these locations has already started. Having completed testing back in 2014, we demonstrated this new technology in COMEX this year, showcasing download speeds of far more than 200 Mbps. This is very exciting for our customers as it opens up a whole new online experience.”
Ooredoo’s Turbocharging programme will deliver further upgrades across the Sultanate during 2015. A number of cities will see and feel the difference with the expansion extending to Manah, Al Hamra, Izki, Adam, Bahla and Nizwa, Al Mudaybi, Dima Wattayeen, Bidiyah, Ibra, Al Qabil, Jaalan Bani Bu Ali, Khasab, Bukha, Qurayyat, Masirah, Hayma, Hallaniyat, Al Jazir and Thumrait.
As a result of their widespread upgrades, Ooredoo has seen a significant rise in broadband uptake within turbocharged areas, as customers enjoy the benefits of faster data speeds with higher quality. Customers on Ooredoo’s 3G+ network can enjoy data download speeds as high as 10Mbps which is almost four times faster than the speeds experienced at the beginning of the Turbocharging programme back in 2012. For those on the 4G network, the speeds are even faster.
