The Nawras Goodwill Journey volunteers visited the Al Wafa Social Centre with gifts, presents and a 4-wheel drive land cruiser for the use of the centre here on Sunday.
The social centre is a charitable organization devoted to the service of handicapped and mentally retarded children. The centre has around 110 children under the care and guidance of 23 women volunteer workers.
Welcoming the Goodwill volunteers, centre Director Thuraiya Ahmed Mohammed Al Balushi said the love and support given by Nawras in the shape of donations and their personal involvement was more than overwhelming and was a big morale booster for the management and the volunteers of the social centre.
“As caregivers who are looking after the needs of handicapped children on a day-to-day basis, I know what it feels like when these children are given that extra love and attention in developing a certain minimum level of skills in them. And Nawras is playing a major role in making it possible to do our job by providing us with the necessary materials, equipment and facilities to give these children a better life”, explained the director.
Thanking the Nawras team for donating a 4-wheel drive vehicle for the use of the centre, she said the vehicle would enable the centre’s volunteers to visit homes in the far-flung and inaccessible mountainous areas where there are handicapped children as part of the outreach programme.
The social centre general manager Ahmed Al Shizeri appreciating the magnanimous package of gifts and donations by Nawras said it would go a long way in helping the cause of handicapped children. He added that more private companies need to come forward with their donations and support.
Later the children presented a colourful cultural programme comprising group songs, dances and poetry recitations. They also played several games like musical chairs, bursting the balloons and fishing.
The younger children participated in face painting and painting competitions. As usual, the Goodwill volunteers added to the fun and merriment of the occasion by playing games with the children and sharing in the fun and enjoyment.
A group of students of the centre made a beautiful collage depicting the Nawras logo, which was later presented to the leader of the Goodwill Journey Khalid Al Zadjali. The convoy then left on its onward journey to Ibri.
