All Qatar Feels Sense of Pride

The State of Qatar will witness the biggest cultural event in its history in 2010, as Doha becomes the official capital of Arab culture. A huge festival of arts events and cultural activities is scheduled for the coming months, to celebrate the year-long honour of being named for this important role.

Qtel will be the Presenting Partner for the programme and will initiate a campaign designed to encourage visitors and residents to take part in the huge range of activities. Reflecting the impact of new technologies on artistic and cultural expression within the Arab world, Qtel will deploy digital and mobile technology to engage people in the celebrations.

Sheikh Saud bin Nasser Al Thani, Executive Director of the Human Resources, Qtel, said: “Doha 2010 will bring the whole community together to celebrate Arab culture and tradition, and showcase Qatar’s cultural credentials to the whole world. We feel a strong sense of pride that our country has been selected as the capital city for this year-round event and look to fuel that sense of pride across the whole community.”

“Qatar has made bold steps in building its cultural infrastructure in recent years, and we are delighted to provide our fullest support for this remarkable achievement,” he added.

H.E. Mr. Mubarak Bin Nasser Al Khalifa, General Secretary of Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, and Vice President of Higher Committee for Doha Capital of Arab Culture 2010: “We are delighted to be working with a national icon like Qtel to promote Doha 2010 to the people and to the world. Qatar will be a global cultural hub throughout 2010, so the support of a communications leader with such a deep understanding of Qatari culture will make an enormous difference in our plans and ambitions.”

To support Doha 2010, Qtel has developed one of the most far-reaching cultural sponsorship programmes ever deployed in Qatar. As well as material and technological support, Qtel also has the option to empower its employees to provide voluntary support for the Festival. This includes educational and cultural outreach work.

H.E. Mr. Mubarak Bin Nasser Al Khalifa, added: “Qtel’s role in supporting the event will be a huge one, especially that a number of shows like “Beit Al Hekma” opera, “Salah Al Din” opera, “Abu Al Kassim Al Shabi” opera, and a number of poetry nights and cultural plays. In addition, a number of cultural weeks from Syria, Morocco, Egypt and other Arab nations will be presented. We trust Qtel will deliver a great job in communicating all events to our audience and serve our nation under the guidance of H.H. Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, and H.H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, the Heir Apparent.

Over 70 events will be held over the next six weeks to celebrate Qatar’s status of the Capital of Arab culture. This will include performances of the opera Bait Al Hikma (“House of Wisdom”) and the drama The Pearl between Dasha and Gaffal.

There will also be a number of performances, exhibitions, and films in January, February and March, as well as a wider programme for the rest of the year.

Qtel’s sponsorship and support for Doha 2010 is a core part of its wider corporate social responsibility strategy, which has cultural and educational investment as one of its core pillars.

The idea of the cultural capitals came from the United Nations in 1982, with the launch of the “World Decade for Cultural Development”. The programme for the Cultural Capital for the Arab World began in 1996, in Cairo, Egypt.
