Qtel has donated 80 emergency tents to support the Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Al-Thani's Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) in its work in Haiti, it was announced today.
The devastating earthquake that shook the country on 12 January left the country's capital Port-au-Prince devastated and affected about three million people. As the work of relief agencies turns from rescuing the people buried by the earthquake to providing shelter and support for those left behind, Qtel contacted the Thani Bin Abdulla Charity with its offer of help.
In particular, with hundreds of thousands of people left homeless or afraid to return to their damaged houses, there is an urgent need for emergency accommodation. Qtel was able to provide an allotment of tents quickly, and is funding their transport out to Haiti.
In total, the tents can provide emergency shelter for more than 300 people. They are rugged outdoor tents, able to withstand rain and the elements, so should offer some relief to those who are living outside or in makeshift accommodation.
Adel Al Mutawa, Executive Director, Group Communications, Qtel, said: “The Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Al-Thani's Foundation for Humanitarian Services is doing urgent work in Haiti, providing support for people who literally have nothing after the quake has taken their family, home and community. The emergency donation of 80 tents will hopefully provide a small measure of relief for some of those who have been affected.”
Aeidh Al-Qahtani, Chair of Trustees and General Manager of Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Al-Thani's Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) said: “We are very delighted and grateful towards Qtel’s leading role in serving humanitarian causes on the local and global levels. This announcement stresses the fact that Qtel’s efforts are extended globally, and not only within Qatar.
Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Al-Thani's Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) is a leading Qatari foundation in the field of humanitarian and development work at both the local and global levels. The Foundation seeks to provide distinctive humanitarian services and development programmes to realize social solidarity and consolidate humanitarian compassion.
