Building on its heritage as the first company in Qatar to publically commit to Earth Hour, Qtel announced today that it will again switch off every light in its iconic Headquarters Tower in West Bay, Doha on Saturday, March 27.
Earth Hour is an annual international event, created by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The aim is to create a global call to action to make every individual, every business and every community to consider environmental issues and energy conservation.
The campaign, now in its fourth year, started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change. A year later, more than 50 million people across 35 countries participated, and in 2009, over a hundred million people in 88 countries joined the campaign.
This year, Earth Hour will take place around the world on March 27, 2010, at 8.30 pm local time. Iconic buildings including the Forbidden City in Beijing and Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament in London will all go dark for the event.
Qtel’s CSR strategy – “For Qatar, Hand in Hand” – looks to prioritize campaigns that have a lasting impact on the lives of the people of Qatar. As well as environmental issues, Qtel is also engaged in education, healthcare, social welfare and sports initiatives.
The Qtel Tower will go dark from 8.30pm – 9.30pm on Saturday. Normal service will be provided to customers throughout this time.
