Muscat: The Sultanate yesterday celebrated the “World No Tobacco Day” which comes this year under the theme “Let’s make closed places smoke-free”. In this regard, Ministry of Health yesterday held a national seminar where Omantel has been honored for supporting the government’s efforts in promoting a tobacco-free society and educating the public about the dangers of tobacco.
Mohammed Hassan Al Lawatia from Events & Sponsorship Department at Omantel said “This sponsorship is in-line with the company’s plans to support government health initiatives. We at Omantel believe in our responsibilities and realize the health issues caused by the use of tobacco and hence we strongly support the government plans in this regard”.
The celebration of the “World No Tobacco Day” is meant to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption across the globe. The day is furthermore intended to draw global attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects, which currently lead to 5.4 million deaths worldwide annually.
Omantel is one of the main sponsors of health, social, educational, cultural and sports activities in the Sultanate. As recognition from the public, Omantel has been voted as the winner of the Tawasul Civil Society Leaders Award for “Together for a Happier Eid”. The campaign which was launched last year in collaboration with Bank Muscat raised more than R.O 250,000 to support under-privileged children in different parts of the Sultanate.
