Nawras sponsors first Omani woman

Nawras, a Qtel Group company, is proud to be the exclusive sponsor of two Muscat residents—including the first Omani woman—in their incredible journey to hike up Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Muna Al Shanfari, a successful Omani bank executive and mother of three, will be making the trek together with her friend Catherine Lonie, a long time resident of Muscat as well as a lecturer at Sultan Qaboos University, to raise awareness for road safety and in particular, to encourage parents and drivers to use car seats to keep children safer when travelling. The two women will be heading to Africa on 19 June to begin their journey.

Both Al Shanfari and Lonie are keen mountain walkers, taking regular treks up and down local hills to exercise and clear their minds. When work and family commitments allow, they travel at weekends to locations such as the Hajar mountains for an extra challenge. Making use of their own love of sports, the ladies began planning their greatest expedition to date—the summit of the world famous Mount Kilimanjaro, which at 5895 metres is Africa’s highest mountain and one of the world’s famed Seven Summits.

“Hiking is something that I have always loved doing, and my family’s immense support has really helped me to pursue this challenge,” says Al Shanfari. “As an Omani woman, I am incredibly proud to take our country’s name to the top of Africa and to encourage women across Oman to pursue physical fitness in their daily lives.”

As the proud sole sponsor of the trip, Nawras—Oman’s customer friendly communications provider—is covering all the trip expenses for the two adventurers. “Both of these women have incredible passion and energy to balance family, work and personal hobbies," says Tariq Al-Barwani, head of corporate affairs at Nawras. “Listening to our customers and striving to build close relationships with them is a big part of what we do, and in this situation we are confident that both women will find great success in this endeavour.”

The adventure to Tanzania will be fully documented with Al Shanfari and Lonie providing live video and radio updates from their journey to media, friends and family back in Oman.

Nawras takes its corporate social responsibility role seriously and plays an active part in the community in many different ways. Last year this innovative company was delighted to sponsor Nabs Al-Busaidy on his successful attempt to become the first Omani to reach the magnetic North Pole
