  • Huawei Outlines ‘Future of Digital Oilfield’ at ADIPEC 2014

Mobilk - Huawei, a leading global ICT solutions provider, is set to connect with energy leaders at Abu Dhabi International Petroleoum Exhibition & Conference (ADIPEC) 2014, showcasing how a new generation of smarter Digital Oilfield technologies is set to streamline efficiencies, reduce security risks and minimize overhead costs in the energy sector.

Taking place on 11 November in the Capital Suite, Conference Room 15 at the  National Conference & Exhibition Center, Huawei will be hosting sessions alongside industry analysts Gartner to highlight how the right Digital Oilfield technologies can help increase production rates, reduce risk, build collaboration and enhance business efficiency.

The need for a greater health and safety environment along with achieving higher levels of efficiency is currently causing energy companies to reconsider their investment models in ICT. Government personnel, Health and Safety Environment (HSE) officers and CIOs in regional Oil & Gas businesses are realizing the importance of reliable ICT systems and devices that will ensure that its employees in the field are physically safe from any potential harm as well as the potential to increase operational efficiencies.

Technology has the ability to replace the role of human site inspectors who risk their lives working in extremely hazardous conditions. Not only is oil exploration becoming more competitive with theft of sensitive data a recurring threat, but oil projects usually take place in hazardous terrains and parts of the world that sometimes experience political instability.

Huawei has a strong belief that Middle East energy companies can greatly improve their processes and drive competitiveness through new technologies, specifically the adoption of digital oilfield and intelligent pipeline solutions. Investment in this level of ICT allows oil companies to better manage and visualize data plus establish a communications infrastructure that links their upstream, midstream and downstream activities together.

Asfar Zaidi, Principal Consultant for Huawei, Enterprise, Middle East said: “Oil companies need to ensure they have a secure and reliable infrastructure, which allows for the use of wireless technologies, cloud, Big Data, High Performance Computer (HPC), Emergency Command Center solutions and Unified Tele-presence services. By having a unified ICT system, operators will be able to intelligently and automatically capture key performance field, refinery and pipeline data reducing the need for engineers to risk spending time in the field.”

According to Huawei, investment in this level of ICT will allow for oil companies to beter manage and visualize data, establish a communications infrastructure that links their upstream, midstream and downstream activities together building a unified system that can detect and isolate faults or attacks at all stages.

Huawei will also be demonstrating its range of innovative technology solutions tailored to the oil and gas sector on its stand. These will include its Wireless solutions, Digital Oilfield Production Communication systems, its Emergency Command Center (ECC), Intelligent Video Surveillance, Unified Communications and Tele-presence services, Big Data solutions, Micro Data Centers, Campus Networks and integration with Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) technology.

Huawei’s Emergency Command Centre (ECC) solutions allow oil and gas companies to monitor their oil delivery fleets and ensure their cargo is safe. An important component of Huawei’s ECC solutions is CCTV systems and Intelligent Video Surveillance, which ensure workforce safety and the protection of assets by preventing intrusions, terrorism, thefts and data leakage.

There is also a rising popularity for the use of Telepresence or video conferencing solutions through mobile devices, enhancing communications within the energy sector and reducing operational costs and risk. Implementing an immersive Telepresence system that supports smart devices is a benefit for energy engineers that are required to work offsite at plants, on rigs or at refinement stations. It reduces the need for unnecessary travel and provides immediate contact with staff on the ground, which ultimately allows for faster response times, lower costs and reductions in risk.

Oil companies in the region are also starting to implement more reliable ICT infrastructures that allow for the use of big data technology solutions, to deal with the deluge of data travelling from remote sites to facilities. In order for systems to be capable of managing, analyzing and extracting value from big data,   High Performance Computing (HPC) solutions are also required. Widely adopted in petroleum exploration organizations, HPC solutions are designed to process large amounts of computing in short time periods and increase efficient processing capabilities, providing easier access to more information.

Huawei has a number of flagship customers across the region in the oil and gas sector, including Saudi Arabia and Iraq, as well as working on global projects in Mexico, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and China.

In addition Huawei will also be displaying its interactive racing simulator in partnership with SAP, highlighting its work helping to develop the SAP HANA® memory computing platform, which is currently being used by McLaren Group.
