Motorola Unveils New Addition

The Mobile Devices and Home business of Motorola, Inc.(NYSE: MOT) announced today the launch of the Motorola APEX1500 Edge QAM; a flexible, high-density, universal edge QAM solution designed to enable more cost-effective deployment of service  providers’ narrowcast content to subscribers.

“The continuing rise in demand for bandwidth for narrowcast services such as video on demand (VOD) and switched digital video (SDV) is driving the need for edge QAM solutions with more flexibility, lower power consumption and higher density,” said Bob Wilson, vice president, Networked Video Solutions Group, Motorola Mobile Devices and Home. “As the newest member of the APEX product family, the Motorola APEX1500 does a stellar job of meeting those tough requirements while being a truly universal edge device.”

With the new Motorola APEX1500 Edge QAM, Motorola delivers a standards-based solution with comprehensive support for SDV and VOD, including Modular Headend Architecture (MHA), VOD encryption and RF port-level redundancy, all in a cost-effective two rack unit platform. The Motorola APEX1500 also supports full session VOD encryption, allowing every VOD session to be uniquely encrypted for each set-top to meet the increasing security requirements of content providers. Additionally, when used with the Motorola SDV solution, the Motorola APEX1500 supports edge encryption of SDV streams for Mediacipher®  markets, thus eliminating the need for a separate centralized network encryption device.

Building on industry leading RF technology available in the Motorola APEX1000 platform, the Motorola APEX1500 offers high QAM density and low power consumption, making it ideal for narrowcast applications. The Motorola APEX1500 gives cable operators unparalleled flexibility in network design, availability and maintenance costs by incorporating up to six hot-swappable QAM modules and two hot swappable and redundant power supplies, all of which are sharable with the Motorola APEX1000.

A rich history of innovation and demonstrated leadership make Motorola an ideal partner to help service providers move into the "Internet Era of TV." Motorola is focused on delivering solutions that help connect people to their content and community, thereby creating compelling consumer experiences as well as new revenue-generating applications for service providers. The APEX product family contributes to those solutions by supporting efficient IP video delivery over DOCSIS, complementing Motorola’s suite of bandwidth-expansion solutions that can free spectrum for allocation to IP video.

Motorola will be demonstrating the APEX1500 at The Cable Show 2010 in Los Angeles, May 11-13, Motorola Booth #1321.
